The "Titania" Schooner Yacht, built for Mr. Robert Stephenson, C.E. 1850. Creator: Unknown. The "Titania" Schooner Yacht, built for Mr. Robert Stephenson, C.E. 1850. Creator: Unknown

The "Titania" Schooner Yacht, built for Mr. Robert Stephenson, C.E. 1850. In the water the Titania very much resembles the Bermudan schooners...she looks long, low, and rakish, with her two tall masts sloping considerably aft...She is formed on the wave-principle of Mr. Scott Russell, and is in many respects very remarkable. She is entirely of iron, and the greater part of her ballast is built into the vessel, so as to form almost part of it. She also possesses the extraordinary roominess, or capacity inside, for cabins and accommodation...The external appearance of the vessel is as handsome as her interior: her shape is made of the fine form calculated to go through the water with least disturbance, and she has every look of a good sea-boat. All her lines are smooth and even, and of good workmanahip. She was built by Messrs. Robinson and Russell, at their ship-building-yard and engine-works, at Millwall...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Titania Schooner Yacht, built for Mr. Robert Stephenson, C.E. 1850, is a stunning example of maritime engineering and design from the Victorian era. The creator of this photograph is unknown, but the description of the Titania was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The Titania was a groundbreaking vessel, built on the wave-principle of Scottish scientist and engineer, Mr. Scott Russell. The schooner yacht was entirely of iron, with the majority of her ballast integrated into the hull, making her both sturdy and efficient. Her external appearance was as impressive as her interior, which boasted remarkable roominess and capacity for cabins and accommodation. The Titania's sleek design, with her two tall masts sloping significantly aft, gave her a long, low, and rakish look. Her lines were smooth and even, and her shape was calculated to minimize disturbance through the water. She was built by Robinson and Russell, at their shipbuilding yard and engine works, in Millwall. The Titania was a true sea-going vessel, with a handsome exterior that belied her advanced engineering. Her resemblance to Bermudan schooners was striking, but her innovative design and construction set her apart. This photograph captures the Titania in her prime, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the time.
