This evocative 19th-century ink drawing by Thomas Shotter Boys depicts the Tomb of Sir George Broke, Lord Cobham and his wife Anne, located in Cobham Church in Kent, England. The aristocratic couple, both dressed in formal attire of the period, are depicted in a solemn and prayerful posture, with Lord Cobham kneeling before his wife's effigy. The intricately carved gisant effigies, which are a common feature of medieval and Renaissance tombs, are brought to life through Boys' skilled use of ink on paper. Sir George Broke, the 9th Baron Cobham, and Anne Braye, later Anne Brooke, Baroness Cobham, were a prominent British noble family with a rich history.
