Toulon, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Toulon, 1858. Toulon is the Plymouth of France, the seat of her naval power in the Mediterranean, and one of her chief naval arsenals...It is a strongly fortified town, situated at the bottom of a deep double bay, which forms the roads. Behind it runs an amphitheatre of hills rising on the north into the heights of Mount Pharon...which stretch their arms as it were round the bay, so as nearly to landlock it, rendering it a safe anchorage, except from the south and east, where it is somewhat unprotected. Six forts on the land side defend the town, while the mouth of the harbour and hills commanding it are studded with forts and redoubts. The port is divided into the old and new, separated from the roadstead by moles, hollow and bombproof, begun in the reign of Henri IV. formed externally into batteries on a level with the water's edge - very formidable against ships. The Port du Commerce, or Darse Vieille, on the E. is appropriated to merchant-vessels, and is bordered by a quay. The Darse Neuve, on the west, is surrounded by the dockyard, slips, the arsenal, the storehouses for provisions, &c. equipments, cannon-foundry, park of artillery, etc. The town itself contains upwards of 40, 000 inhabitants, exclusive of the garrison'. Toulon, 1858 - A Fortified Harbor of Maritime Might and Naval Grandeur
EDITORS COMMENTS
Toulon, a hidden gem in the French Riviera, is famously known as the "Plymouth of France," serving as the country's primary naval powerbase in the Mediterranean and home to one of its largest naval arsenals. This photograph, taken in 1858, showcases the strategic harbor of Toulon, nestled at the bottom of a deep double bay. The town's robust fortifications are evident, with six landside forts safeguarding the community, and the hills of Mont Pharon encircling the bay, creating a natural barrier that nearly seals it off, ensuring a secure anchorage. The town of Toulon, with its over 40,000 inhabitants (excluding the garrison), is situated amidst an amphitheater of hills, with the picturesque Mont Pharon rising in the north. The bay's formidable defenses include six landside forts and an array of forts and redoubts atop the hills that command the harbor. The harbor is divided into the old and new sections, separated by moles that serve as bombproof barriers. The Old Port, or Darse Vieille, is designated for merchant vessels and boasts a quay, while the New Port, or Darse Neuve, is encircled by the dockyard, slips, arsenal, storehouses, cannon foundry, and park of artillery. This photograph, taken from "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a glimpse into the rich history and maritime significance of Toulon, a town that continues to captivate visitors with its stunning beauty and strategic importance.
