The town of Beyrout and Mount Lebanon - from a drawing by J. Lewis Farley, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The town of Beyrout and Mount Lebanon - from a drawing by J. Lewis Farley, 1860. Beyrout, Beirout, or Bairut - the Berytus of the ancients - is a fortified seaport and commercial town of Syria, on a bay of the Mediterranean. It is situated fifty-seven miles W.N.W. from Damascus, of which city it is the port...Beyrout was bombarded and taken by the English in 1840, the main object of the attack - the driving out of the troops of Ibrahim Pacha - having been soon accomplished...The situation of Beyrout is exceedingly beautiful, especially as viewed from the sea. The promontory on which it stands is triangular, the apex projecting some three miles into the Mediterranean, and the base running along the foot of Lebanon. The south-western side is wholly composed of loose drifting sand, and has all the aspect of a desert. The north-western side is totally different. The shore line is formed of a range of irregular, deeply-indented rocks and cliffs, worn into a thousand fantastic forms by the waves...The little port, now in a great measure filled up, lies between a projecting cliff and a ruinous insulated tower, called Burj Fanzar, which bears, like the rest of the fortifications, many a mark of British bullets'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the town of Beyrut, Lebanon, as drawn by J. Lewis Farley in 1860. The drawing was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past of this ancient seaport. Beyrut, also known as Beirut or Berytus, is a fortified town located on the Mediterranean Sea, approximately fifty-seven miles west-northwest of Damascus. The town's history is rich and complex, with Beyrut serving as the port city for Damascus and experiencing significant military action throughout the centuries. In 1840, Beyrut was bombarded and taken by the English forces, with the main objective being the expulsion of Ibrahim Pacha's troops. The natural beauty of Beyrut is evident in this drawing, with the town nestled at the base of Mount Lebanon. The triangular promontory on which Beyrut is situated extends three miles into the Mediterranean, and the northwestern side of the town is characterized by a rugged coastline of deeply-indented rocks and cliffs. The little port, now largely filled in, lies between a projecting cliff and a ruinous insulated tower, known as Burj Fanzar. The fortifications of Beyrut, including Burj Fanzar, bear the marks of British bullets, a testament to the town's tumultuous history. The southwestern side of Beyrut is composed of loose drifting sand, giving it an otherworldly, desert-like appearance. Despite its challenging geography, Beyrut has long been a thriving commercial center, attracting traders from around the Mediterranean and beyond. Today, Beyrut remains a vibrant and dynamic city, a testament to its rich history and resilient spirit.
