Town and Fortress of Silistria - from an original sketch by our own artist, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Town and Fortress of Silistria - from an original sketch by our own artist, 1854. During the Siege of Silistria, Turkish troops and British officers were confined in the Ottoman fortress at Silistra, present-day Bulgaria. An extract from Captain Charles Nasmyth's account: Up to the 24th [May] there is nothing very particular to record, except that, on the evening of that day, the two English officers, in commemoration of Queen Victoria's birthday, drank her Majesty's health "in a mug full of sour wine". A furious attack was made by the Russians on the 25th; but the fortress does not seem to have sustained much damage from it, although the besieging force was by that time estimated at 100, 000 men. During the two following days the Russians were very quiet, preparing, no doubt, for the grand attack on the 28th of May....'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch captures the Town and Fortress of Silistria as they appeared during the Siege of 1854. The fortress, located in present-day Bulgaria, served as a prison for Turkish troops and British officers. In the quiet before the storm, the two English officers marked Queen Victoria's birthday with a toast, raising their mugs of sour wine in her honor. But the respite was brief. On May 25, the Russians launched a fierce attack, and though the fortress held strong, the besieging force was estimated to number 100,000 men. The following days saw the Russians preparing for their grand assault on May 28. The sketch, an original from our own artist in 1854, provides a glimpse into the tense and uncertain atmosphere of the siege. The fortress, with its imposing walls and towers, stands proudly against the backdrop of the Danube River, a testament to the historical significance of this pivotal moment in the Crimean War.
