EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning triptych, titled "Triptych with the Last Supper and Donors," is a masterpiece of 16th-century Dutch art created by Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen around 1525-1530. The central panel depicts the Last Supper as described in the Gospel of John, with Jesus and the twelve apostles gathered around the table. The atmosphere is tense, with Jesus gesturing towards the betrayer, Judas Iscariot, who is shown reaching into his robe to take the piece of bread that symbolizes the betrayal. The inner left wing features Adriana van Roon, a wealthy merchant's wife, in prayer before St. James the Great. St. James, depicted in armor and holding a pilgrim's staff, is the patron saint of Spain and a popular figure for pilgrims. Adriana's devotion to the saint is further emphasized by the coat of arms on the outer wing, which bears her family crest. The inner right wing showcases Dirk Pietersz Spangert, a prominent citizen of Leiden, and his wife with St. Mary Magdalene. Mary Magdalene, identified by her characteristic long hair and alabaster jar, is shown in a contemplative pose, emphasizing her role as a penitent sinner and the patron saint of repentance. The Spangert house mark is displayed on the outer wing, reflecting their status and wealth. The triptych is an excellent example of oil painting on glass, a technique popular in the Netherlands during the 16th century. The vivid colors and intricate details showcase the skill and artistry of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen, also known as Jacobus Major. This triptych is now a cherished part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, offering a glimpse into the religious devotion and artistic achievements of the Netherlands during the 16th century.
