Triumphal Chair of Martin, King of Arragon, 1860. Creator: Unknown
Triumphal Chair of Martin, King of Arragon [sic], 1860. This...magnificent chair, of solid silver...is one of the most carefully-preserved curiosities in the Spanish city of Barcelona. Tradition records it to have been the seat of Don Martin, King of Arragon. This Monarch, when apprised of his succession to the throne of John I. was absent in Sicily, engaged in the suppression of a rebellion which had broken out in that island, where his son and daughter-in-law reigned. After the subjugation of the Sicilians and the re-establishment of his son's authority Don Martin returned to take possession of his newly-acquired kingdom. He landed at Barcelona in the year 1397, and at the splendid festivals given to commemorate his accession the seat before us formed his throne of state'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This magnificent chair, of solid silver, is one of the most carefully-preserved curiosities in the Spanish city of Barcelona. Known as the Triumphal Chair of Martin, King of Aragon, the seat dates back to the 14th century and is steeped in rich history. According to tradition, this Monarch, who was known as Martin the Humane, Martin the Elder, or Martin the Ecclesiastic, was in Sicily when he received news of his succession to the throne of John I. of Aragon in 1396. Martin was engaged in suppressing a rebellion in Sicily, where his son and daughter-in-law reigned. After the rebellion was quelled, Martin returned to Barcelona in 1397 to take possession of his newly-acquired kingdom. The splendid festivities held to commemorate his accession saw this chair serving as his throne of state. The chair, which is intricately engraved, is a stunning example of mediaeval metalwork. Its image, captured in the Illustrated London News in 1860, showcases the chair's exquisite craftsmanship and the attention to detail that went into its creation. The chair's ornate design, with its intricate patterns and engravings, is a testament to the artistic and cultural richness of the Middle Ages. Today, the Triumphal Chair of Martin, King of Aragon, is a popular tourist attraction in Barcelona, drawing visitors from around the world who are interested in history, art, and the Middle Ages. The chair's preservation is a testament to the importance placed on cultural heritage in Spain and serves as a reminder of the country's rich history and artistic legacy.
