The True Hidalgo, 1873. Artist: Joseph Swain

The True Hidalgo, 1873. King Amadeus remarks to the crowd A Gentleman, and a Son of Savoy, will not Reign on Sufferance! King Amadeus of Spain is seen throwing his crown to the mob. In February 1873, the King renounced his claim to the Spanish throne for himself, his sons and his heirs. He had taken the throne only two years earlier, but his efforts to govern had been thwarted by infighting amongst various factions. Nor had his life been made any easier by the social ostracism imposed upon him and his family by the families of the highest rank in Spain. Hidalgo simply means Spanish gentleman. His abdication was accepted and, on 12th February, the Spanish Assembly elected a government of Republicans under Senor Figueras. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 22, 1873

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The True Hidalgo, 1873" captures a pivotal moment in Spanish history. The artist Joseph Swain skillfully depicts King Amadeus of Spain renouncing his claim to the throne amidst a tumultuous political event. In this powerful image, we see King Amadeus standing before a crowd, his face filled with determination and resolve. He holds his crown high above his head before dramatically throwing it into the hands of the mob below. This symbolic act represents his decision to no longer reign on sufferance. King Amadeus had ascended to the throne only two years prior but faced numerous challenges during his short reign. Infighting among factions and social ostracism from influential families made governing nearly impossible for him and his family. The caption highlights that "Hidalgo" means Spanish gentleman, emphasizing King Amadeus' noble character as he willingly relinquishes power for the greater good of Spain. His abdication was accepted by the Spanish Assembly, leading to the election of a Republican government under Senor Figueras. This historical engraving not only showcases Joseph Swain's artistic talent but also serves as a poignant reminder of political turmoil in 19th-century Spain. It immortalizes an important moment when one man's sacrifice altered the course of an entire nation's destiny.
