Tunis water-carriers, 1864. Creator: Joseph Austin Benwell
Tunis water-carriers, 1864. The group represented in our Engraving under this title is from a sketch by an artist who recently visited Tunis and thence went overland to Egypt. In Tunis, water-carriers are an indispensable part of the community, as there are no underground mains and pipes for the distribution of that necessary liquid; while the heat of the climate and the Mohammedan customs of ablution make the personal consumption of large supplies of water even more important than it is in our northern climate. The water is carried in earthern jars of a peculiar shape, and a bunch of palm-leaves is placed in the mouth of each vessel to protect it from impurities and to keep the water cool'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from 1864 in Tunis, showcasing the indispensable role of water-carriers in the community. In a time when underground mains and pipes were non-existent, these men played a crucial role in providing the necessary liquid for daily life. The unique earthen jars they carry are not just vessels for water but also symbols of tradition and practicality. Each jar is adorned with a bunch of palm leaves, serving both to protect the water from impurities and keep it cool in the scorching heat of North Africa.
The image portrays a group of barefoot men going about their daily task with determination and grace. Their bodies tell stories of hard work and resilience, embodying the spirit of their profession. The black and white tones add depth to this historical snapshot, transporting us back to a time when simple yet essential tasks like carrying water defined everyday life.
Joseph Austin Benwell's skillful engraving brings this moment to life, capturing not just a scene but an entire way of living in 19th century Tunisia. It serves as a reminder of the importance of access to clean water and the dedication of those who ensure its distribution against all odds.
