Udungui trade route: Ulyatui village, end of 19th century.
From a collection of 71 items (photographs and negatives on glass) made in the late 19th century and early 20th century by the famous revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin (1851-1937) and by N. Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878. The collection illustrates aspects of Transbaikal history in this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which at that time was one of the main branches of the economy of the region. The photographs show various technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, as well as views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal, as well as images of local people of different ethnicities and nationalities. Several of the photographs, including one of the large and imposing Russian consulate, were taken in Urga, at that time the capital of Outer Mongolia (and known today as Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Nikolai Apollonovich Charushin at the end of the 19th century, depicts the bustling Ulyatui village along the Udungui trade route. Charushin, a revolutionary-populist and social and political activist, captured this image as part of a collection of 71 photographs and negatives, which he produced during his time in the Transbaikal Territory. During this period, the tea trade with China was a significant economic force in the region. This photograph offers a glimpse into the vibrant commercial activity that characterized the Udungui trade route. The villagers in this image are likely engaged in the preparation and packaging of tea, which was then transported to China and other markets. The collection, which includes images of various technological processes, sections of the trade route, and views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and Transbaikal towns and villages, provides a rich and valuable record of this historical period. Charushin's photographs offer a unique perspective on the diverse ethnic and national groups that inhabited the region and contributed to the bustling trade economy. This photograph, in particular, showcases the architectural diversity of Ulyatui village, with its mix of traditional Mongolian gers and Russian-style buildings. The imposing Russian consulate, which can be seen in the background, underscores the complex political dynamics of the region during this time. Charushin's photographs offer a fascinating window into the past, providing insights into the people, cultures, and economies of Transbaikal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This image of Ulyatui village is a testament to the rich history and cultural exchange that characterized this region during this period.
