EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century folio, hailing from India, showcases two powerful goddesses, Vaishnavi and Varahi, engaged in combat with Asuras on the recto side, while Kumari fiercely fights her own Asuras on the verso. The intricate, opaque watercolor and ink drawing on paper is believed to have been created between 1675 and 1700, possibly in Rajasthan. Vaishnavi, the goddess of the Vaishnavas, is depicted riding on a lion, brandishing a sword and a conch shell in her hands. Varahi, the boar-headed goddess, stands tall on her hind legs, wielding a trident and a discus. Both goddesses are surrounded by an array of animals, including bears, birds, goats, and peacocks, as they vanquish the Asuras, mythological demons. On the other side, Kumari, the virgin goddess, is shown riding on a goat, her right hand holding a sword and her left hand holding a shield. She is surrounded by men, some of whom are depicted as Asuras, as she fiercely defends herself. This artwork is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hinduism in India and Southeast Asia during the 17th century. It is reminiscent of the Markandeya Purana and the Devimahatmya (Glory of the Goddess) texts, which describe the goddesses' battles against the Asuras. The vibrant colors and dynamic compositions in this piece evoke a sense of conflict and violence, making it a captivating and intriguing work of art.
