This stunning 17th century folio depicts two scenes from the Devimahatmya, or the Glory of the Goddess, a well-known Hindu text that recounts the exploits of the goddess Durga and her various manifestations. The recto side shows Vaishnavi and Varahi, two forms of Durga, engaged in battle with Asuras, or demons. Vaishnavi, the goddess of the sacred river Vishnu, rides a goat and wields a sword and a trident, while Varahi, the boar-man avatar of Vishnu, brandishes a sword and a goad. The asuras, depicted as men and animals, are shown charging at the goddesses with swords and shields. On the verso side, Kumari, another form of Durga, is shown fighting a group of asuras. She is depicted as a young girl, seated on a lion and holding a sword and a shield. Surrounding her are various birds and animals, including a peacock, a bear, and a goat, adding to the dynamic and chaotic scene of the battle. This beautiful work of art is believed to have originated in Rajasthan, India, between 1675 and 1700. It is an opaque watercolor and ink drawing on paper, and its intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the rich artistic heritage of Hindustan during the 17th century. The manuscript is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and it continues to inspire awe and admiration for the power and beauty of the Hindu goddesses.
