Vestibule to the Library of the House of Commons, 1857. Interior of the Palace of Westminster, London. It would be difficult to point to any edifice, ancient or modern, in which the style and character of the architecture are more completely carried out than in the new Houses of Parliament. Every apartment and means of communication throughout the vast edifice has its characteristics of the Tudor palatial style, which Sir Charles Barry has adopted...[Depicted] is a Vestibule communicating with the Library of the House of Commons. The door panels are filled with glass and brass trellis-work; and the side and upper windows are charged with armorial badges of the Red and White Roses and Portcullis'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the Vestibule leading to the Library of the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster, London, as it appeared in 1857. The image is an exquisite example of the Tudor palatial style adopted by Sir Charles Barry for the new Houses of Parliament. The vestibule serves as a transitional space between the public and private realms of the House of Commons, featuring intricately designed door panels filled with glass and brass trellis-work, and side and upper windows adorned with armorial badges of the Red and White Roses and Portcullis. The architectural detailing is a testament to the Gothic Revival movement, with its neo-Gothic arches, ornate woodwork, and black and white color palette. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and intricacy of the interior design and decoration of the Victorian-era Houses of Parliament. The vestibule's enchanting atmosphere invites one to imagine the political debates and discussions that have taken place within its walls over the centuries.
