View of the city of Bath from the south-east, 1864. Creator: Mason Jackson
View of the city of Bath from the south-east, 1864. 'We present a View of the city of Bath...upon the occasion of the meeting of the British Association there, though it would, at any other time, have been a very acceptable contribution to our Illustrations of "The Land We Live In." The most elegant city in England, as Bath was formerly esteemed - at a time when the fairest of our marine watering-places had not yet come into existence - is situated partly in the valley of the Avon and partly on the slopes of an amphitheatre of hills, where its terraces and crescents, built of white freestone, relieved by the rich verdure of gardens and groves, afford a prospect of singular beauty. From the Abbey Church below to the Royal Crescent which stands conspicuous above, and the tower of Mr. Beckford on Lansdowne-hill, the whole scene abounds with stately and attractive objects; and the absence of those factory chimneys, with their smoke, which obscure the really grand features of some of our northern towns, allows the view of Bath to be enjoyed without any impediment to the spectator'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864
