View of Lima, the capital of Peru, 1864. Creator: Unknown

View of Lima, the capital of Peru, 1864. Engraving from a sketch by David Powell, ...taken from the foot of the hill, San Cristoval, at the end of the old Alameda...The principal buildings...are the cathedral...and the church of San Francisco, which is by far the finest building of its kind in the New World. In the distance we see the high ground of the island of San Lorenzo, protecting the anchorage at Callao. The Alameda, which runs along the river and constitutes the foreground of our View, is, unfortunately, a place to be avoided on account of the rascals who frequent it. The outline of the buildings in Lima is very picturesque; but the detail is very coarse...In the foreground is an iron-foundry, which we may remark as an instance of the European inventions which are coming into general use in these new countries of South America'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a stunning view of Lima, the capital of Peru, in 1864. The engraving from a sketch by David Powell showcases the city's principal buildings, including the cathedral and the church of San Francisco. In the distance, we can see the high ground of the island of San Lorenzo protecting the anchorage at Callao. The foreground features an iron-foundry, highlighting European inventions making their way into South America during this period. The Alameda running along the river adds to the picturesque outline of Lima's buildings, although described as coarse in detail. Despite its beauty, it is noted that the Alameda is best avoided due to unsavory characters frequenting it. This image provides a glimpse into 19th-century Lima and its industrial development during a time when metalworking was becoming more prevalent. Overall, this historic print offers a unique perspective on Lima's landscape and architecture at a time when modernization and European influences were beginning to shape South American cities like never before.
