Front view of the Pantheon, Oxford Street, Westminster, London, 1814
Front view of the Pantheon, Oxford Street, Westminster, London, 1814. Designed by James Wyatt, the Pantheon was a place of public entertainment that opened in 1772. It was destroyed by a fire in 1792 but was rebuilt in 1795, re-opening with a masquerade ball. It was converted into a theatre by NW Cundy in 1811-1812, but closed in 1814. The building later served as a bazaar, then as the offices of a wine merchant before being demolished in 1937 to make way for a branch of Marks and Spencer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the front view of the Pantheon, located on Oxford Street in Westminster, London. Designed by James Wyatt, this iconic building was a popular place of public entertainment when it first opened its doors in 1772. Sadly, it fell victim to a devastating fire in 1792 but was rebuilt and reopened in 1795 with a grand masquerade ball. Intriguingly, the Pantheon underwent another transformation when NW Cundy converted it into a theater between 1811 and 1812. However, its theatrical journey came to an end just two years later when it closed its doors for good in 1814. Over time, this historic structure served various purposes including functioning as a bazaar and then as offices for a wine merchant. Regrettably, due to urban development plans, the Pantheon met its ultimate fate and was demolished in 1937 to make way for a branch of Marks & Spencer. This engraving from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century showcases the grandeur of this architectural gem. Its impressive portico and elegant exterior stand proudly on Oxford Street – once again reminding us of London's rich history in arts and entertainment.
