EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "View of the Back of Statues of the Dioscuri at the Quirinal," dates back to the 16th century and is an anonymous work attributed to the Italian engraver Antonio Lafreri. The image depicts the backside of the ancient Roman statues of the Dioscuri, also known as Castor and Pollux, located on Quirinal Hill in Rome. The Dioscuri were twin brothers in Greek mythology, often depicted as horsemen. In Roman mythology, they were considered protectors of Rome and were associated with astrology and the constellation Gemini. The statues, which once stood in the Temple of Castor and Pollux, were renowned for their magnificent horses and intricate detail. This print is believed to be part of Lafreri's publication, "Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae" or "Mirror of the Magnificence of Rome," which showcased architectural and historical sites in and around the city. The print provides a unique perspective of the statues, allowing viewers to appreciate their intricate details and craftsmanship from an often overlooked angle. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Rome and the enduring fascination with its history and mythology. The print is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
