The Visitation, c. 1504. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)

The Visitation, c. 1504. These eight woodcuts (1959.99.8-15) progress from Gabriels announcement to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, to the events of her early motherhood and beyond. This included the joy of sharing her pregnancy with her cousin Elizabeth, Jesuss birth, and the subsequent arrival of the magi. After Jesuss circumcision and presentation at the temple the Holy Family fled to Egypt to avoid Herod and stayed there for several years. The seemingly out of place last scene shows a glimpse of their daily life in Egypt as Joseph continues his carpentry and Mary spins wool. The Holy Family is surrounded by angels and helpful putti and are blessed by God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove overhead

The Visitation, c. 1504

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating woodcut print created by the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer. This series of eight woodcuts takes us on a visual journey through significant moments in the life of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Starting with Gabriel's announcement to Mary about her divine pregnancy, we witness the joyous sharing of this news with her cousin Elizabeth. The birth of Jesus follows, accompanied by the arrival of the magi who came to pay homage to the newborn king. As their story unfolds, we see how after Jesus' circumcision and presentation at the temple, they were forced to flee to Egypt due to Herod's threat. In an unexpected scene that adds depth and realism, we catch a glimpse into their daily life in Egypt – Joseph diligently working as a carpenter while Mary spins wool. Throughout these scenes filled with tender emotions and profound significance, angels surround them offering guidance and support. Above them hovers God the Father blessing this holy family alongside the Holy Spirit represented as a dove. Albrecht Dürer masterfully captures each moment with intricate details and skillful composition typical of his Renaissance style. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a testament to faith for generations to come. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this woodcut print allows viewers today to connect with history while admiring Dürer's craftsmanship and devotion.
