Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader, aged 4, 1874
Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader, aged 4, 1874. Lenin (1870-1924) became leader of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1903. He became involved in revolutionary politics when studying law at University in the late 1880s. In 1895 he was arrested by the authorities, serving a years imprisonment followed by four years exile to Siberia. In 1906 he left Russia for security reasons, becoming the focus of the revolutionary opposition abroad. Lenin returned to Russia in 1917 after the February Revolution, but had to flee to Finland after a failed workers uprising in July. In October the Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerenskys Provisional Government in a further revolution, and Lenin was elected Premier of the Soviet Union. He was wounded in an assassination attempt in 1918 and this, together with the strains of revolution and the ensuing Civil War, led to a deterioration in his health. After a stroke left him partially paralysed in 1922, Lenins active role in government declined. Found in the collection of the State Museum of History, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a young Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the renowned Russian Bolshevik revolutionary leader, at the tender age of four in 1874. Little did anyone know that this innocent child would grow up to shape the course of history. Lenin's journey into revolutionary politics began during his law studies at university in the late 1880s. His unwavering commitment to social change led him to face imprisonment and exile by the authorities in 1895. However, these setbacks only fueled his determination further. Forced to leave Russia for security reasons in 1906, Lenin became a prominent figurehead for the revolutionary opposition abroad. It was not until after the February Revolution of 1917 that he could return home, but political turmoil forced him into temporary exile once again. The turning point came with the October Revolution when Lenin and his fellow Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government, propelling him into power as Premier of the Soviet Union. Despite surviving an assassination attempt in 1918, Lenin's health deteriorated due to various strains associated with revolution and civil war. By 1922, a stroke left Lenin partially paralyzed and limited his active role within government affairs. Nevertheless, his legacy as one of history's most influential leaders remains intact. Preserved within the State Museum of History in Moscow, this remarkable photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how even great leaders begin their journeys from humble beginnings.
