EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th-century print, titled "Vue de la nouvelle Bourse et du tribunal de commerce, prise du coin de la rue Notre-Dame des Victoires" (View of the New Stock Exchange and the Commercial Tribunal, Taken from the Corner of Rue Notre-Dame des Victoires), was created by the renowned French artist and engraver Henri Courvoisier-Voisin between 1817 and 1824. The meticulously detailed image captures the grandeur of Paris during the Neoclassical period, with a focus on two of the city's most significant architectural landmarks: the Palais Brongniart, or the Stock Exchange, and the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris. The Palais Brongniart, designed by Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, dominates the scene with its imposing neoclassical facade. The building, completed in 1826, served as the home of the Paris Stock Exchange until 1985. The adjacent Tribunal de Commerce de Paris, a smaller yet equally impressive structure, can be seen to the left of the image. The print is a beautiful example of the copper engraving and watercolor techniques, with intricate lines and delicate shading that bring the bustling Parisian scene to life. The artist masterfully captures the vibrant energy of the city, with figures milling about the streets and carriages making their way through the busy intersection of Rue Notre-Dame des Victoires and Rue des Filles Saint-Thomas. This exquisite work of art is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of Paris during the early 19th century. It is a must-have for any collection of fine art, particularly for those with an interest in French Neoclassicism, graphic arts, or the history of finance and commerce.
