The War in Denmark: Prussian outposts before Düppel: "Wer da?" ("Who goes there?"), 1864. Creator: Frederick John Skill
The War in Denmark from a sketch by our special artist with the allied German armies: Prussian outposts before Duppel: "Wer da?" ("Who goes there?"), 1864. 'The pair of martial figures which our Artist has drawn, standing with their rifle-muskets half raised, and already fingering the deadly triggers, are a couple of Prussian infantry soldiers, on outpost duty somewhere in the neighbourhood of Duppel. The metal helmet, surmounted with a spike, which is peculiar to the army of Prussia, should be well adapted to resist a sabre-cut, when they receive a cavalry charge, but must be an incumbrance at other times. Under the helmet they wear a head-covering of black cloth. They have high-collared coats, long over-coats, and black cloth gloves. Their word of challenge is "Wer da?" It is the German for "Who goes there?" One of those straw huts, in which they lurk by the roadside and watch all that passes, is shown in this Engraving'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Glimpse into History: Prussian Outposts before Düppel, "Wer da?" (Who Goes There?)**
In this poignant print, artist Frederick John Skill captures a moment of tension and uncertainty on the battle-scarred landscape of Denmark in 1864. Two Prussian infantry soldiers stand at attention, rifle-muskets half-raised and fingers poised to trigger deadly shots. Their distinctive metal helmets, adorned with spikes, seem designed for protection against cavalry charges - but may prove cumbersome otherwise.
The pair's attire is a testament to the era: high-collared coats, long overcoats, and black cloth gloves that hint at their rugged determination. The phrase "Wer da?" (Who goes there?) echoes through this moment of anticipation, as they scrutinize every passerby from behind straw huts like the one depicted in this engraving.
This haunting image is a testament to the human cost of war, where even brief moments can be filled with trepidation and fear. The War in Denmark may have been a relatively short conflict compared to others of its time, but it still left an indelible mark on those who lived through it - as this poignant print so eloquently conveys.
