The War in Denmark: sketch of the Redoubts Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 at Duppel, showing the Danish and the Prussian outpost sentries - from a sketch taken on the Ruhenberg Hill, by our special artist, 1864. '...since the 17th of March, Ruhenberg Hill, which is not more than half a mile from the nearest of the Danish redoubts..., has been in possession of the Prussians...The Duppel Windmill and the Redoubts, which are on the brow of the hill, are here seen from the west...In the foreground are four of the Prussian soldiers, who lie under the cover of a low bank of earth, which has been thrown up to protect them from the Danish fire. The hedge that traverses the middle is also lined with Prussians, and they are posted in twos and threes across the field beyond. The Danes, in like manner, by twos and threes, with regular intervals between each station, occupy the next field a little higher up the hill. The hostile outposts are within easy musket-shot of each other. We see the high road to Sonderburg, with its telegraph posts, ascending the hill...This is the ground where the unsuccessful Prussian attack...[on] the Redoubt No. 6, but were repulsed three several times by the fire of the Danish batteries'. **A Glimpse into History: The War in Denmark**
This striking photograph print, taken in 1864, captures a pivotal moment during the war between Denmark and Prussia. Titled "The Redoubts Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 at Duppel", it shows the tense standoff between Danish and Prussian forces on Ruhenberg Hill.
Since March 17th of that year, the hill has been under Prussian control, with their soldiers stationed in redoubts (fortified outposts) just a short distance from the Danish lines. The photograph reveals four Prussian sentries lying low behind an earthen bank to avoid enemy fire. Beyond them lies a field where more Prussians are posted at regular intervals.
The Danes occupy the adjacent hill, their own soldiers spaced similarly apart, with both sides within easy musket-shot of each other. In the distance, the high road to Sonderburg winds its way up the hill, flanked by telegraph posts. This very ground witnessed a failed Prussian attack on Redoubt No. 6, repelled three times by Danish artillery.
