Washington - The Capitol, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Washington - The Capitol, 1844. View of the Capitol Building in Washington DC, USA. A most disgraceful scene took place on the floor of the House of Representatives to-day...one William S. Moore, a cripple, who has been here for several weeks to obtain a claim from Government, attempted to intrude within the house, was prevented, and discharged a pistol at Mr. McCauslin, of Ohio, a member. The ball missed the mark of the would-be assassin, and wounded an officer of the Capitol. Moore was taken into custody. The whole affair was referred to a committee of five for investigation, with instructions to report a bill for the punishment of offences committed within the house. Moore was retained in custody of the Sergeant-at-Arms of the house. The officer is not mortally wounded. The ball entered the thigh. His name is John L. Whirt. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in American history - the view of the Capitol Building in Washington DC, USA, back in 1844. However, behind this serene image lies a shocking incident that unfolded within the walls of the House of Representatives on that fateful day. William S. Moore, a determined cripple seeking a claim from the Government, attempted to forcefully enter the house but was promptly stopped. In an act of desperation and violence, Moore discharged his pistol at Mr. McCauslin, an Ohio representative. Fortunately, fate intervened as the bullet missed its intended target and instead struck Officer John L. Whirt in his thigh. The aftermath saw Moore swiftly apprehended by authorities while Officer Whirt received medical attention for his non-fatal wound. This disgraceful scene prompted immediate action from Congress as they formed a committee to investigate and propose legislation for punishing such offenses committed within their hallowed halls. As we gaze upon this engraving sourced from "Illustrated London News" in 1844, it serves as a stark reminder that even amidst grandeur and political power resides vulnerability and danger. The unknown creator of this print has inadvertently captured not only architectural beauty but also an indelible moment etched into America's historical tapestry - one where ambition clashed with lawfulness within these iconic walls known as The Capitol Building.
