West Side, Upper Falls of the Genesee, 1874. Creator: W. H. Morse

West Side, Upper Falls of the Genesee, 1874. Waterfalls on the Genesee River at Rochester, New York State, USA. The...Upper Falls...are ninety-six feet in height, and it is thus evident that, with such a cataract in the centre of the city, the facilities for obtaining water-power could hardly be excelled. The mill-races conduct the main supply along the two opposite shores, and, as the mills are mainly situated below the level of the falls, the full force of the water can be utilized. It thus appears that...the waters of the Genesee make a descent, including the falls and the rapids above them, of two hundred and sixty feet, and the water-power, as estimated for the Upper Fall alone, equals forty thousand horse-power. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "West Side, Upper Falls of the Genesee, 1874" by W. H. Morse takes us back in time to witness the awe-inspiring waterfalls on the Genesee River at Rochester, New York State. The image showcases the majestic beauty of the Upper Falls, standing tall at an impressive height of ninety-six feet. The photograph not only captures nature's splendor but also highlights the practical significance of these falls for harnessing water-power. With such a magnificent cataract located right in the heart of the city, it is no wonder that Rochester boasts exceptional facilities for obtaining water-power. Ingeniously designed mill-races guide and distribute this vital resource along both shores while strategically situating mills below the falls' level allows full utilization of their immense force. As we delve deeper into this historical account from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, we learn that beyond its scenic grandeur, this natural wonder holds tremendous potential as a source of energy. The combined descent including falls and rapids reaches an astonishing two hundred and sixty feet. Remarkably estimated at forty thousand horse-power for just the Upper Fall alone! W. H. Morse's skillful capture transports us to a time when nature's raw power was harnessed ingeniously to fuel industrial progress.
