Wild Fowl Shooting, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Wild Fowl Shooting, 1858. The most numerous class of our wild-fowl visitors from the Arctic shores is the brent or black goose...The white geese are generally considered to consist of four different species: the grey leg, the white-fronted goose, the bean goose, and the pink-toed goose...On the square-topped Bass Rock, near North Berwick, the solan geese, too, may be seen in thousands. They are said to lay only one egg, and to sit with their foot on it the livelong month of May...Naturalists have observed extraordinary changes in the flocks of white geese, as up to a given period they consist of the great grey goose, and then, although the flocks apparently remain stationary, the grey geese disappear, and the white-fronted geese fill their places. Believers in witchcraft might revel in hypotheses, especially as witches riding on geese form no inconsiderable portion of nursery lore...The Cromarty Firth is a favourite spot with the punters; and Sir John R. Carnac, Bart. M.P. is reported to have killed twenty-five brent geese at one shot with a punt-gun. All the birds were picked up dead, and deponent sayeth not how many became "cripples" from that slaughtering battery...the pleasure of shooting them is many degrees beyond the pleasure of eating them'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Wild Fowl Shooting, 1858" is a captivating photograph that transports us back in time to an era when the pursuit of wildfowl was a popular pastime for the aristocracy. The image showcases a group of men dressed in Victorian attire, gathered around a boat with guns at the ready, preparing for a day of wild fowl shooting. The scene is set against the backdrop of a tranquil body of water, likely located in Scotland, as indicated by the mention of the Cromarty Firth. The men are poised to hunt a variety of wild geese, including the brent or black goose, the solan goose, and several species of white geese such as the grey leg, white-fronted goose, bean goose, and pink-toed goose. The photograph's caption provides fascinating insights into the natural history of these birds and their migratory patterns. For instance, we learn that the brent geese are the most numerous class of wildfowl visitors from the Arctic shores, and that the white geese are believed to consist of several different species. The solan geese, which can be seen in thousands on the square-topped Bass Rock, are said to lay only one egg and sit on it for the entire month of May. The caption also touches upon the mysterious and superstitious beliefs of the time, with a mention of witches riding on geese. However, the focus soon shifts back to the practicalities of wild fowl shooting, with tales of impressive kills and the pleasure derived from the pursuit itself. The photograph and its accompanying caption offer a unique glimpse into the past, providing insights into the natural history of wild geese, the Victorian obsession with shooting, and the cultural beliefs of the time. Despite the passage of time, the allure of the great outdoors and the thrill of the hunt continue to captivate us, making this photograph a timeless treasure.
