EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning full-length portrait by the renowned Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck captures the moment of betrothal between William II, Prince of Orange (1626-1650), and Mary Stuart (1631-1660), the young daughter of King Charles I of England, in 1641. The Prince, dressed in a richly textured doublet and breeches, gazes directly at the viewer with a confident and resolute expression. Mary, dressed in an elegant and intricately designed gown with a matching hat, looks demurely at her future husband, her hand gently resting on his. The union of the House of Orange and the House of Stuart was significant, as it marked the beginning of an alliance between the Dutch Republic and the English monarchy during the Eighty Years' War. The Baroque-style painting, with its vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, showcases the opulence and grandeur of the aristocracy of the time. The portrait also highlights the concept of lenfance, or the idea of the protection and care of a man towards his wife, which was a valued concept in the aristocracy of the era. The image of the young couple, holding hands, represents the promise of a new dynasty and the hope for peace and prosperity in the Low Countries.
