Women's Christian Temperance Union - Mrs. Lillian Stevens And Mrs. Anna Gordon, 1911. Creator: Harris & Ewing. Women's Christian Temperance Union - Mrs. Lillian Stevens And Mrs. Anna Gordon, 1911. Creator: Harris & Ewing

Women's Christian Temperance Union - Mrs. Lillian Stevens And Mrs. Anna Gordon, 1911. [American temperance advocates and social reformers: Lillian M. N. Stevens helped launch the Maine chapter of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), and was editor-in-chief of The Union Signal'. Anna Adams Gordon was the WCTU national president. The stated purpose of the organisation was to create a "sober and pure world" by abstinence, purity, and evangelical Christianity. Thousands of women marched into liquor stores and bars and demanded that owners sign a pledge to stop selling alcoholic beverages. As these women advocated for temperance and the affairs of their homes, they also demanded to have an equal role in public activity. "The temperance movement...gave women the opportunity to be engaged in public political life for the first time." Tara Isabella Burton in "The Feminist History of Prohibition"]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1911, two influential figures of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) are depicted: Mrs. Lillian M. N. Stevens and Mrs. Anna Adams Gordon. The Women's Christian Temperance Union was a formidable social reform organization, dedicated to creating a "sober and pure world" through the promotion of temperance, purity, and evangelical Christianity. Mrs. Lillian Stevens, a pioneering figure in the Maine chapter of the WCTU, is seen here in the company of Mrs. Anna Gordon, the national president of the organization. Stevens was an editor-in-chief of "The Union Signal," the official publication of the WCTU. Together, these women led the charge against the sale and consumption of alcohol, organizing marches into liquor stores and bars to demand that owners sign a pledge to cease selling alcoholic beverages. The temperance movement was a pivotal moment in women's history, as it provided them with an opportunity to engage in public political life for the first time. The WCTU's advocacy for temperance and the welfare of their homes extended beyond the private sphere and into the public domain. This photograph serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment and the significant impact they had on American society during this period. The photograph was taken by the renowned photography studio, Harris & Ewing, in 1911. The image captures the determination and resolve of these two remarkable women, who played a crucial role in shaping the course of American history through their activism and dedication to the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
