English scientist and mathematician Isaac Newtons (1642-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Woolsthorpe Manor, the birthplace of one of history's greatest scientific minds, Sir Isaac Newton. The image transports us back to 1840, capturing the essence of rural life in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was an English scientist and mathematician whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized science and thought. His theories on gravity and motion, outlined in his monumental work "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" (1687), continue to shape our understanding of the universe. Additionally, Newton's contributions to optics led him to construct the first reflecting telescope. The photograph also highlights the manor house itself—a symbol of Newton's humble beginnings and a testament to his immense intellectual achievements. Surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees, Woolsthorpe Manor serves as a reminder that great ideas can emerge from even the most unassuming locations. Newton's legacy extends far beyond his birthplace; he was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 for his remarkable contributions to science. Today, he rests in Westminster Abbey—an eternal tribute to his brilliance. This enchanting engraving from Thomas Dugdale's "Dugdales England and Wales Delineated" captures both the beauty of nature and the significance of this historic location. It allows us a glimpse into seventeenth-century England while honoring Sir Isaac Newton—the revered figure who forever changed our understanding of mathematics, physics, and scientific inquiry.
