Wounded Antiochus after His Fall Dictating His Will," an etching by the French artist Noël Hallé, depicts the final moments of Antiochus III the Great, the Seleucid king of Syria, as he lies on his deathbed. The image, created in the 1730s, captures the king in a state of profound contemplation, dictating his last will and testament to his attendants. Antiochus III, also known as Antiochus the Great, ruled the Seleucid Empire from 223 to 187 BC. Known for his military conquests and cultural patronage, Antiochus expanded his empire to include parts of Egypt and Anatolia. However, his reign came to an end when he was defeated by the Roman Republic in the Battle of Magnesia in 189 BC. The etching shows Antiochus lying on a bed, surrounded by his loyal advisors and servants. The king's face is etched with the lines of age and weariness, while his eyes are closed in thought. He clutches a scroll in one hand, symbolizing the will he is dictating, while his other hand rests on his chest, as if in pain.
