EDITORS COMMENTS
Ando Hiroshige's Yoshiwara: Fuji Marsh and Ukishima Plain (Yoshiwara, Fuji no numa ukishima ga hara), no. 15, is a stunning color woodblock print from the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations (Gojusan tsugi meisho zue), also known as the Vertical Tokaido. Created in 1855 during the Edo period, this print showcases the beautiful scenery of Japan's historic Tokaido Road. The image captures the tranquil scene of a marshy area, known as Fuji no numa, located between the Ukishima Plain and the base of Mount Fuji. The marshland is teeming with life, with fisherfolk wading through the shallow waters and casting their nets, while a flock of birds flies overhead, adding to the serene atmosphere. In the background, Mount Fuji, or Fousi Yama, stands majestically, its snow-capped peak towering above the landscape. The mountain's grey hue contrasts beautifully with the vibrant colors of the marsh and the blue sky. The print is adorned with a cartouche, bearing the title and artist's name, "Hiroshige Ichiyusai," in elegant calligraphy. Hiroshige, a renowned ukiyo-e artist, is known for his detailed and expressive depictions of everyday life in Japan. This print is an excellent representation of the artistic school of ukiyo-e, which flourished in Japan during the 19th century. It is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan and the beauty of its natural landscapes. The print is currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
