Zulaykha in her palace and as an old woman with Joseph, from a Panj Ganj (Five Treasures)
Zulaykha in her palace and as an old woman with Joseph, from a Panj Ganj (Five Treasures) of Abd al- Rahman Jami (Persian, 1414-1492), 1603-1607. This page illustrates two episodes from the story of Joseph and Zulaykha. In the first, Zulaykha awaits Joseph in the house she has built for them. She has painted the walls with romantic scenes and dressed herself alluringly with the intention of seducing him. The artist has discreetly inserted his name and the paintings date in a brick of the house at the upper left. The virtuous Joseph, with flaming halo and eternally youthful features, rejects the married womans advances, but many years later, when Zulaykha is an elderly widow, they are reunited. In the second episode we see the aged Zulaykha meeting Joseph. His prayers will restore her to youthful beauty, and the two will finally be joined as lovers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing artwork titled "Zulaykha in her palace and as an old woman with Joseph" from the Panj Ganj (Five Treasures) collection by Abd al-Rahman Jami. Created between 1603-1607, this piece beautifully illustrates two pivotal moments from the timeless story of Joseph and Zulaykha. In the first episode depicted, we witness Zulaykha eagerly awaiting Joseph's arrival in a meticulously designed house she has built for them. The walls are adorned with romantic scenes, while Zulaykha herself dresses alluringly, hoping to seduce him. The artist subtly embeds his name and the painting's date within a brick at the upper left corner of the house. However, despite Zulaykha's advances, Joseph remains virtuous and rejects her temptations. Fast forward many years later when Zulaykha is now an elderly widow; destiny brings them together once again. In this second episode portrayed on the print, we witness their reunion as aged individuals. It is believed that through Joseph's prayers, he will restore Zulaykha to her youthful beauty so that they may finally unite as lovers. This exquisite artwork was created using ink, opaque watercolor, and gold on paper in Mughal patronage style influenced by Deccan artistry. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection today, it serves as a testament to India's rich cultural heritage during the early 17th century.
