St Johns Church, Waterloo Road, Lambeth, Greater London. Exterior view from the south-west showing the west elevation of St Johns Church, showing the building post-restoration following bomb damage during the Second World War.
St Johns Church was originally built in 1823-4 to designs by the architect Francis Bedford. It was one of four churches built in Lambeth in the Greek Revival style. The church was damaged by bombs during the Second World War. It was later restored and designated as the Festival of Britain church in 1951. 1950s Church Restoration Greek Revival

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic St Johns Church in Lambeth, Greater London. The image showcases the church's west elevation, which had been meticulously restored after suffering bomb damage during the Second World War. Originally constructed between 1823-4 by architect Francis Bedford, St Johns Church stands as a remarkable example of Greek Revival architecture. Alongside three other churches in Lambeth built in a similar style, it exudes timeless elegance and grandeur. The devastating impact of war did not spare this architectural gem, but through dedicated restoration efforts, its former glory was revived. This photograph serves as a testament to human resilience and determination to preserve our cultural heritage. Dating back to the 1950s, this image also captures an interesting detail outside the church - a Festival of Britain poster proudly displayed on its exterior. This designation bestowed upon St Johns Church further highlights its significance within British history and culture. Campbell's Press Studio Limited has masterfully captured this momentous scene with their expert craftsmanship. Through their lens, we are transported back in time to witness both the beauty of restoration and the spirit of celebration surrounding St Johns Church during that era.
