EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era in Southampton's High Street. The image showcases the iconic Burton store, with its striking curved dark granite facade that exudes an air of elegance and grandeur. Standing proudly at 2-6a High Street, this architectural gem was sadly demolished around 2018, leaving only its facade intact. The preservation of this historic frontage was not in vain, as it was intended to be seamlessly incorporated into a new development on the site. Its retention serves as a poignant reminder of the city's rich heritage and commitment to preserving its past while embracing progress. The Burton store's granite facade is part of a distinguished lineage found across various locations such as Reading, Kingston upon Hull, and Bournemouth. This particular example stands out for its art deco influences, showcasing intricate details that were characteristic of the time. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot expertly captures every nuance in this photograph print, allowing viewers to appreciate both the beauty and significance behind this piece of history. As we gaze upon it today, we are transported back to an era when craftsmanship and attention to detail were paramount in creating structures that would stand the test of time.
