Pelham Street shops MBC01_02_006

Pelham Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. The former Boots store on the corner of Pelham Street and High Street, seen from the south-west showing the west elevation and part of the ornate Art-Nouveau shopfront.
The store was built in 1902-1905 and was designed by A N Bromley. It was one of the first flagship stores to be built for a major company and is considered to be a very good example of an early 20th century commercial building. The store was extended in 1920s and refurbished in 1974. At the time of this photograph, the premises were occupied by Maples, a furniture store

Art Nouveau Blue High Street Shop Shopping Street Scene Summer Beaux Arts Style Chemist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Pelham Street shops in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Standing proudly on the corner of Pelham Street and High Street is the former Boots store, a true architectural gem that showcases ornate Art-Nouveau design elements. Built between 1902 and 1905 by A N Bromley, this flagship store was one of the first to be constructed for a major company. Its significance lies not only in its historical importance but also as an exemplary representation of early 20th-century commercial architecture. The west elevation and part of the shopfront are beautifully showcased from a southwest perspective in this image. The intricate details and craftsmanship evident in the art nouveau features make it truly remarkable. Over time, this iconic building underwent extensions in the 1920s and a refurbishment in 1974. At the moment when this photograph was taken, Maples, a renowned furniture store, occupied these premises. As you gaze upon this vintage scene filled with nostalgia, take note of how seamlessly it blends into its surroundings. The blue hues evoke a sense of summer tranquility while highlighting both street life and shopping culture at that time. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot's expertly captured image allows us to appreciate not just history but also architectural beauty frozen in time.
