EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur and elegance of Mansion House in Doncaster. The image captures an interior view of the entrance hall, with its magnificent staircase taking center stage. Built between 1746 and 1748 by James Paine for the Doncaster Corporation, this mayoral residence is a true testament to Georgian architecture. The Imperial staircase, or double staircase, commands attention with its intricate design featuring both plain and scrolled iron balusters. As you ascend, your eyes are drawn to a stunning Venetian opening adorned with four pairs of Corinthian columns supporting ornate cornices. Stepping into the upper hall behind the staircase reveals walls paneled in rich woodwork and a gracefully curved ceiling embellished with meticulously crafted moulded cornices. Every detail within this space exudes sophistication and refinement. This photograph beautifully captures not only the architectural composition but also provides a glimpse into the historical significance of Mansion House as it served as a symbol of power for local authorities throughout centuries. George Bernard Wood's expert photography allows viewers to appreciate every aspect of this remarkable structure - from its Palladian influences to its impeccable perspective. As we admire this image, let us be transported back in time to experience firsthand the opulence that once graced these halls.
