EDITORS COMMENTS

This print transports us back in time to the grandeur of Worcester Cathedral. Taken between 1920 and 1949 by Herbert Leo Felton, it beautifully captures a mesmerizing view looking west through the choir. As our eyes wander through the vast space, we are immediately drawn to the focal point - the magnificent tomb of King John. The cathedral's interior is bathed in a soft glow, courtesy of natural light streaming in from stained glass windows that adorn its walls. The intricate details of Gothic architecture are on full display, with soaring arches and delicate tracery creating an atmosphere of awe-inspiring beauty. However, it is King John's tomb that truly steals the show. Positioned prominently amidst this architectural marvel, it stands as a testament to both his royal lineage and historical significance. Adorned with ornate carvings and regal motifs, it exudes an air of majesty befitting its occupant. Felton's expert composition allows us to appreciate not only the physical splendor but also feel a sense of reverence within these hallowed grounds. It serves as a poignant reminder of England's rich history and cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph print from Historic England's archive collection, we can't help but be transported into another era - one where kings ruled with authority and cathedrals stood as symbols of faith and power.
