THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS. A large crowd of people outside the Netherlands Bank in Den Haag (The Hague), just 4 days after the start of the First World War.
The photographer was on holiday in Holland at the outbreak of the First World War and this photograph was taken just 4 days later. After the Austro-Hungarian declaration of war against Serbia on 28th July 1914, the Amsterdam stock exchange closed and there was a subsequent run on the banks with people withdrawing their savings. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the bustling streets of The Hague just four days after the outbreak of the First World War. Taken by photographer Katherine MacFee during her holiday in Holland, this image transports us back to a time filled with uncertainty and tension. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly the Netherlands Bank, where a large crowd has gathered. This scene unfolds against the backdrop of an era marked by financial instability as people anxiously withdraw their savings following the closure of Amsterdam's stock exchange due to Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia on July 28th, 1914. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, it becomes evident that each person present carries their own story and emotions. Their expressions range from concern to curiosity, reflecting the atmosphere that permeated society at that critical juncture. Beyond its historical significance, this image also offers glimpses into early 20th-century fashion and culture. The diverse costumes worn by individuals within the crowd provide insight into societal norms and styles prevalent during this period. MacFee's ability to capture such raw emotion amidst chaos is truly commendable. Through her lens, she immortalizes a pivotal moment in global history while simultaneously inviting us to reflect upon our own place within it.
