Step back in time to July 1919 and witness the joyous celebrations of Peace Day, captured beautifully in this historic photograph by Katherine MacFee. This striking image shows Oxford Street, one of London's busiest shopping districts, transformed into a sea of color and celebration as people from all walks of life gather to mark the end of World War I. The iconic Selfridges department store stands tall in the background, its facade adorned with patriotic decorations and flags. In the foreground, a temporary structure featuring statues of servicemen from the armed forces and an angel holding laurel wreaths adds a poignant touch to the scene. Pedestrians stroll along the street, some stopping to admire the decorations or take part in impromptu gatherings. Meanwhile, traffic flows smoothly through the area as cars and horse-drawn carriages make their way down Oxford Street. This photograph is a powerful reminder of a momentous occasion that brought together people from across Britain to celebrate peace and unity after four long years of war. It's a testament to human resilience and hope for a brighter future.
