Coastal Slipway

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken by the talented photographer Damian Grady, transports us back in time to the historic Horsea Island slipways during World War II. The image showcases the remnants of the D-Day landing craft slipways that played a crucial role in one of history's most significant military operations. Located on the picturesque coast of Portsmouth, Hampshire, these slipways served as vital infrastructure for launching amphibious assault vehicles onto the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944. As we gaze upon this remarkable print captured in 2020 by Historic England, we can't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for those who embarked on this perilous journey over seven decades ago. The composition beautifully captures both the coastal charm and historical significance of Horsea Island. The weathered concrete structures stand as silent witnesses to an era defined by bravery and sacrifice. Their presence serves as a poignant reminder of the countless lives forever changed during that fateful day. Damian Grady's keen eye for detail allows us to appreciate not only the architectural elements but also how nature has reclaimed parts of this once bustling wartime site. It is through his lens that we are able to connect with our past and pay tribute to those who fought valiantly for freedom. As we reflect upon this powerful image, let us honor those who came before us and remember their unwavering courage in shaping our world today.
