EDITORS COMMENTS

This aerial photograph, captured by the talented Damian Grady, unveils a haunting relic of Britain's Cold War era. The disused missile base 33983_014, formerly known as the Thor Missile site at RAF North Luffenham Airfield in Edith Weston, Rutland, stands as a solemn reminder of our nation's defense history. In this thought-provoking image taken in 2020, we are transported back to a time when tension and uncertainty loomed large. The Thor ballistic nuclear missiles were once deployed on this very ground between 1959 and 1963. Now abandoned and forgotten, these remnants bear witness to an era defined by geopolitical rivalries and the constant threat of annihilation. The desolate airfield stretches out beneath us like a canvas frozen in time. Nature has begun its reclamation process; overgrown vegetation encroaches upon crumbling concrete structures that once housed powerful weapons capable of unimaginable destruction. It is here that one can almost hear echoes of past conversations among military personnel who tirelessly worked to safeguard our nation. Damian Grady's expertly composed aerial perspective allows us to fully grasp the scale and magnitude of this disused missile base. Its stark presence against the serene backdrop serves as a poignant symbol – reminding us not only of our collective vulnerability but also highlighting humanity's enduring quest for peace amidst tumultuous times. As we reflect upon this evocative photograph from Historic England's archives, let it serve as both a testament to our shared.
