THE MALL, CITY OF WESTMINSTER, GREATER LONDON. Looking along the Mall towards Buckingham Palace, showing decorations for the coronation of Elizabeth II, including three Coronation Arches over the road and decorative standards topped by crowns positioned on either side of the road, with pedestrians walking along the side of the road.
Four steel Coronation Arches, designed by Eric Bedford, were erected over the Mall for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953. The arches featured metalwork crowns and fan-shaped designs, and were floodlit at night. The arches were linked by lines of standards mounted with golden crowns. From each standard were hung four scarlet banners, not shown in this photograph, bearing the royal cypher E R

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and excitement surrounding the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The image showcases the iconic Mall in Greater London, adorned with magnificent coronation decorations. As our gaze follows the road towards Buckingham Palace, we are greeted by three majestic Coronation Arches that gracefully span across the street. These arches, designed by Eric Bedford, feature intricate metalwork crowns and fan-shaped designs that exude regality. The scene is further enhanced by decorative standards positioned on either side of the road, each topped with a gleaming crown. Pedestrians can be seen strolling along the side of this historic avenue as they bask in the anticipation and celebration of this momentous occasion. At nightfall, these steel arches were illuminated to create a mesmerizing spectacle for all who passed through. Linked together by lines of standards adorned with golden crowns, they formed an enchanting pathway fit for royalty. Although not visible in this particular photograph, four scarlet banners bearing Queen Elizabeth II's royal cypher E R hung from each standard – a symbol of her reign and authority. This snapshot frozen in time encapsulates both artistry and design while capturing an important chapter in British history. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy left behind by Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and stands as a landmark testament to her reign.
