Queen Mother JLP01_11_22616_19

Four Limes, Wheathampstead, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. The Queen Mother in conversation with Laing Retirement Homes staff at the opening of the Four Limes retirement complex.
Laing announced the contract to construct 44 one and two bedroom flats and 6 two bedroom bungalows in June 1985 and the retirement complex was largely complete by the official opening by the Queen Mother in May 1986. One of the homes in the complex was the 3 millionth to be built under the auspices of the National House Building Councils 10 year warranty scheme, in its 50th year. A large 17th century house at one end of the site was refurbished and converted in to flats, wardens accommodation and communal lounge, kitchen and laundry. The house had been the former residence of naturalist Graham Dangerfield in the 1960s who had kept a private zoo on the site where the homes were built

1980s Ceremony People Royalty Smile Conversation Queen Mother

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history as Queen Mother visits the Four Limes retirement complex in Wheathampstead, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. The image showcases the Queen Mother engaged in an animated conversation with the staff of Laing Retirement Homes during the opening ceremony. Laing Retirement Homes had secured a contract to construct 44 one and two bedroom flats and 6 two-bedroom bungalows at this location, making it a remarkable achievement for both parties involved. By June 1985, construction was well underway, and by May 1986, when this photograph was taken, the retirement complex was almost complete. Interestingly, one of the homes within this development held special significance as it marked the impressive milestone of being the three millionth home built under the National House Building Council's warranty scheme. This notable accomplishment coincided with the council's 50th year anniversary. The site itself holds historical charm as a refurbished 17th-century house stands proudly at one end of the complex. Once belonging to naturalist Graham Dangerfield in the 1960s who maintained a private zoo on these grounds before they were transformed into homes. In this image captured by A© Historic England Archive, we witness not only royalty but also genuine smiles and engaging conversations that symbolize unity between different generations and their shared vision for comfortable living spaces for retirees.
