Tintern Abbey a63_02112
TINTERN ABBEY, MONMOUTHSHIRE, WALES. Exterior view of Tintern Abbey, seen from the south-west, with the west front, south side of the nave and south transept in view.
Exterior view of the west front, south side of the nave and south transept of the church of Tintern Abbey. The church has a cruciform plan and remains mostly instant, keeping the height of the church walls and much of the window traceries. The west front is in the foreground, and all three stanges of the front are nearly intact. At the bottom is a set of twin doors with trefoil arches, and a nine-light window above them, which takes up the whoile of the second stage. The window has most, if not all of its tracery intact. Above this is a smaller window. To the right is the south side of the nave, the lower section of which still has a roof. In the background is the south transept, a two storeyed section with much of the tracery in all of the windows intact. In the distance is a small triangle of stone, notably the top of the east window showing over the walls. The abbey was founded by the Cistercian Order in 1131. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Tintern Abbey in all its grandeur. Taken from the southwest, the image captures the exterior view of this historic abbey located in Monmouthshire, Wales. The west front, south side of the nave, and south transept are beautifully displayed. The abbey's cruciform plan is evident as it stands tall and proud, preserving much of its original structure. The church walls retain their height while intricate window traceries add a touch of elegance to the architecture. In the foreground, we see the well-preserved west front with three intact stages. Twin doors with trefoil arches grace its lower section, accompanied by a magnificent nine-light window that dominates the second stage. Moving towards the right side of the image, we observe part of the nave's south side still sheltered by a roof. As our gaze extends into the background, we encounter an impressive two-story south transept adorned with remarkably preserved tracery in all its windows. Intriguingly peeking over these ancient walls is a small triangle of stone representing none other than Tintern Abbey's east window top—a tantalizing glimpse into centuries past. Originally founded in 1131 by members of Cistercian Order (notably not related to any company), this remarkable abbey continues to captivate visitors with its timeless beauty and rich history. This stunning photograph serves as both a testament to its enduring allure and an invitation for further exploration beyond commercial use—courtesy of E M Booty from Historic England.
