EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of General Miguel Ricardo da Alava, painted by George Dawe in 1818. Housed at Apsley House in London, this artwork pays homage to a remarkable military figure. General da Alava (1771-1843) was not only a veteran of the Spanish contingent at Trafalgar but also played a crucial role in the uprising against French forces in 1808. In 1810, he was sent as a Spanish liaison to work alongside the British in Portugal and formed a close friendship with none other than the Duke of Wellington himself. Da Alava's diplomatic skills were recognized when he became Spain's ambassador to The Hague in 1815. During this time, he also served on Wellington's field staff as the Spanish Commissionary for the allies during the historic Battle of Waterloo. The painting captures da Alava's dignified demeanor and serves as an enduring tribute to his contributions on both national and international fronts. This photograph print from Historic England Photo Library allows viewers to appreciate every brushstroke that brings out his character and valor. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of General da Alava's unwavering commitment to his country and his pivotal role within one of history's most significant battles.
