OSBORNE HOUSE, Isle of Wight. " La Siesta", 1841, by Franz Xaver WINTERHALTER (1805-73). Painting purchased by English Heritage in 2008 with help from The Art Fund and the Island Friends of Royal Osborne. Queen Victoria originally bought the painting in 1841 for her dressing room and wrote in her journal " To-day I got from Paris a beautiful picture by Winterhalter which I had ordered. It is quite small, representing a " Siesta", three lovely Italian girls, with one of them asleep."
