EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a nostalgic moment in time, transporting us back to the bustling streets of London in the early 1930s. Two young girls stand mesmerized before the enchanting window display of Chad Valley Tich dolls at J J Samuels stationery shop on Strand. The date range places us between November 21st, 1931, and November 24th, 1933, during which Tich was a beloved comic strip character in the Daily Mirror. Created by Frank Dowling and illustrated by Dart, Tich brought joy to readers with his humorous adventures. The final Tich comic would be published just one day after this photo's timeframe. Chad Valley toys were renowned for their quality craftsmanship and charm, making them highly sought-after treasures for children of that era. The dolls showcased in this display undoubtedly captivated the imaginations of these two young girls as they peered through the glass pane. J J Samuels Limited was an established retailer on Strand during this period. Originally located at 371 Strand before moving to number 157 by 1936, their shop catered to various needs including stationery supplies. This remarkable print not only serves as a visual reminder of a bygone era but also evokes feelings of innocence and wonderment that transcend time itself.
