EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Liberty department store, nestled on Regent Street in London. The image showcases the stunning exterior of this newly completed Arts and Crafts Tudor style building, a true masterpiece of architectural design. Constructed between 1922 and 1924, this extraordinary structure stands as a remarkable response to the prevailing trend for stone dressed steel-framed buildings during that era. Designed by Edwin T. Hall and E. Stanley Hall, the Great Marlborough Street facade of Liberty's department store exudes grandeur and elegance. What makes it even more fascinating is its unique construction using timbers sourced from two renowned naval vessels: HMS Hindustan and HMS Impregnable. Commissioned by Higgs and Hill, builders of this magnificent establishment, this photograph was expertly captured in 1924 by Bedford Lemere and Co. , showcasing their exceptional talent for architectural photography. The image transports us back in time to an era when retail spaces were not just places to shop but also works of art themselves. It serves as a testament to the enduring beauty of craftsmanship and pays homage to Liberty's rich history as one of London's most beloved department stores. This print from Historic England Archive allows us to appreciate the splendorous architecture that has stood the test of time while reminding us of our connection with history through these tangible remnants from days gone by.
