HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge a98_05144

TOWER BRIDGE, Stepney, London. Looking down onto the foredeck of the cruiser HMS Belfast. Being guided up the River Thames by two tugs on the approach to Tower Bridge, which is opening to let it pass. This was Belfasts last voyage before she moored in the Pool of London. It was there converted to a static visitor attraction and is now operated by the Imperial War Museum. Photographed by Eric de Mare in 1971

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in London's maritime history. The iconic Tower Bridge stands tall and majestic, its bascules raised to allow the mighty cruiser HMS Belfast to pass through. This was the final voyage of the Belfast before it found its permanent home in the Pool of London, where it would be transformed into a static visitor attraction. The image showcases the sheer size and power of this naval vessel as it is guided up the River Thames by two tugs. The foredeck of the Belfast is bustling with activity, giving us a glimpse into life on board during its active service days. It serves as a reminder of Britain's rich naval heritage and its role in protecting these shores. Photographed by Eric de Mare in 1971, this picture perfectly encapsulates both strength and elegance. De Mare skillfully captures every detail - from the intricate architecture of Tower Bridge to the sleek lines of HMS Belfast - creating an image that transports us back in time. Today, thanks to preservation efforts by Imperial War Museum, visitors can step aboard this floating museum and explore its decks for themselves. This photograph serves as a testament to not only our nation's military prowess but also our commitment to preserving important historical landmarks for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
