Mary Ardens House a98_05228

MARY ARDENs HOUSE / PALMERs FARM, Station Road, Wilmcote, Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire. This house was first referred to as Mary Ardens House in 1798. Mary Arden was Shakespeares mother and the house dates from the early 16th century. However, it is now known that this is in fact Palmers Farm, and the red-brick cottage to the south-west is where Mary Arden lived. Both properties are under the care of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Photographed by Eric de Mare between 1945 and 1980

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of history and literature in one frame. The image showcases Mary Arden's House, also known as Palmer's Farm, located on Station Road in Wilmcote, Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire. Dating back to the early 16th century, this house holds great significance as it was once home to Mary Arden, who happened to be none other than William Shakespeare's mother. The photograph beautifully portrays the rustic charm of this historic property. Its red-brick exterior stands tall against a backdrop of lush greenery and blue skies. A sense of tranquility emanates from the scene, inviting viewers to step back in time and imagine life during Shakespearean era. Although initially referred to as Mary Arden's House since 1798, recent discoveries have revealed that this particular building is actually Palmers Farm. However, just southwest of it lies a charming red-brick cottage where Mary Arden resided. Preserving these invaluable pieces of history falls under the responsibility of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Their care ensures that future generations can continue to appreciate and learn from these architectural gems. Photographed by Eric de Mare between 1945 and 1980 for Historic England, this image serves as a testament to his talent for capturing both beauty and historical significance through his lens. It reminds us all how artistry can intertwine with heritage in profound ways.
