1920s Animals Livestock Pond Oasthouse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Katherine MacFee transports us back to the picturesque countryside of Stone-cum-Ebony, Ashford, Kent in the 1920s. The image showcases a serene scene where sheep graze peacefully at the edge of a tranquil pond. Beyond them, we catch a glimpse of the iconic oasthouses that once stood proudly on Luckhurst's Lower Road. These traditional hop kilns and hop houses were an integral part of Kent's rich agricultural history. They served as vital structures for drying and processing hops, essential ingredients in brewing beer. Standing approximately 85 meters northwest from Luckhurst farmhouse, these oasthouses were emblematic of rural life during that era. Sadly, time has taken its toll on these historic buildings, and they have since been demolished. However, through this evocative photograph, we can still appreciate their former glory and significance to the local community. MacFee's expert composition captures not only the architectural beauty but also highlights the harmonious coexistence between nature and human activity. The presence of livestock adds an extra layer of authenticity to this snapshot from yesteryears. As we gaze upon this enchanting image, let us reflect on our connection with nature and heritage while appreciating how landscapes evolve over time.
